In March Rooney admitted that he wants to manage Manchester United eventually.

United’s all-time record goalscorer, he scored 253 times in 559 appearances for the club.

He told The Sun: ‘The whole reason in me going into management is Manchester United. I got offered the job interview for the Everton job.

‘I want to be Manchester United manager. I know I am not ready now but I have to plan everything I do to make sure one day it will happen.’

Rooney started his managerial career at Derby County, with the club having to deal with significant financial issues.

After leaving Derby in June, Rooney became the manager of DC United, who he previously represented as a player.

Rooney has been in charge of 14 matches so far, winning two, drawing three and losing nine.
