In a tragic incident in Pennsylvania, an 11-year-old boy is accused of fatally shooting his father while he slept, allegedly in retaliation for having his gaming console confiscated. The young boy reportedly confessed to his mother, saying, “I killed daddy.”

Police were called to a home in Duncannon Borough, roughly 15 miles from Harrisburg, in the early hours of Tuesday morning. According to court documents sourced by WGAL News 8, they received a report around 3 a.m. regarding an “unresponsive male.”

Upon arrival, officers discovered 42-year-old Douglas Dietz deceased in his bed, the victim of a gunshot wound to the head.

Authorities have identified the victim’s 11-year-old adopted son, Clayton Dietz, as the primary suspect in the shooting.

Douglas’ wife recounted to investigators that she was awakened by a loud noise and noticed a smell akin to fireworks, which led to the grim discovery.

She said she tried to nudge her husband to wake him but he was unresponsive and noticed something dripping from the bed.

After turning on the light, she realized what she initially believed was water was actually blood, WGAL News 8 reported.

Moments later, the boy allegedly entered the bedroom yelling, “Daddy’s dead,” before telling his mother, “I killed Daddy,” police said.

The shooting occurred on Clayton’s birthday, police said — just hours after the family went to bed following a midnight “Happy Birthday” celebration.

The boy told investigators he had a good day with his parents but became enraged after his father told him it was time for bed and locked up his Nintendo Switch in the family’s gun safe.

Clayton told police he found a key in his father’s drawer, unlocked the safe while searching for the console. He then removed a firearm, loaded it, and walked to his father’s bedside.

The affidavit alleges the boy cocked the hammer and fired a single shot into his sleeping father’s head.

The child allegedly told investigators, “I shot somebody,” and acknowledged his father was the intended target.

When asked what he thought would happen after pulling the trigger, Clayton said he was “mad” and “had not thought about that,” investigators wrote.

The 11-year-old was taken into custody and charged with criminal homicide. He was denied bail and is being held at the Perry County Prison. He is due to appear in court on Thursday.

Investigators said the couple adopted Clayton in 2018.

A neighbor said the killing has rattled the small Pennsylvania community.

“They’re very kind. I didn’t talk to them much — they kept to themselves and seemed pretty nice. I didn’t expect this,” neighbor Jesse Weldon told WGAL News 8.

The Susquenita School District issued a statement Wednesday acknowledging the impact of the killing on students and families.

“We recognize that in a close-knit community such as ours, events like this can affect our students,” the district said.

“Our school counselors and psychologists are available to provide support to any students in need.”
