DENVER (KDVR) Passengers were evacuated Thursday evening from an American Airlines flight after a fire was reported.

According to the Denver International Airport, there was an aircraft fire “to an American Airlines plane” that was sitting at gate C38 on Thursday evening, producing “visible smoke.”

“Passengers were evacuated and the slides were deployed,” the airport said.

The airport said the fire was extinguished and no injuries had been reported as of 6:15 p.m. However, at 9:40 p.m., the airport said that 12 people had been transported to area hospitals with minor injuries.

American Airlines provided a statement to FOX31 about the incident.

“After landing safely and taxiing to the gate at Denver International Airport (DEN), American Airlines Flight 1006 experienced an engine-related issue. The 172 customers and six crew members deplaned and are being relocated to the terminal. We thank our crew members, DEN team and first responders for their quick and decisive action with the safety of everyone on board and on the ground as the priority.”

The flight took off from the Colorado Springs Airport and was headed to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, but was diverted to DIA. The plane used for the flight was a Boeing 737-800, according to American Airlines.

According to recordings of the air traffic control conversation, a pilot on the plane sensed high engine vibrations, and told air traffic control they were cruising “slower than normal.”
