Kathy Griffin recently disclosed that she unexpectedly fell for a man who is over four decades her junior.
The 65-year-old comedian shared details about her relationship with a 23-year-old man, which blossomed after her split from her second husband, Randy Bick.
Griffin expressed that her young partner genuinely understood and appreciated her true self.
“I inadvertently fell in love with a 23-year-old,” she explained in an essay for the Cut, published on Wednesday. “His age meant he didn’t carry the typical sexism, misogyny, and prejudices that men my age often do.”
Despite sounding “corny” and “lame,” Griffin admitted she felt incredibly at ease with him.
“It was nice to know that my heart could still feel like that in my 60s, and it was nice to have the universe show me a guy that I really got a kick out of but also respected,” she shared.
“I thought he was smart,” she added. “I thought he could roll in different worlds. It sounds cliché, and maybe he was an old soul, but I don’t know, we just clicked.”
Still, Griffin knew their romance couldn’t last, and felt she had too much “baggage” for him.
She said she had to “set him free,” even though he told her he didn’t want kids and could be with her forever.
“I really was in love with him,” she stressed. “He touched my heart.”
“We gave it a shot anyway, and we both went with it for a while, and then it came time to go,” she continued. “He made me feel sexy and special and smart and funny. It had a lot of the elements of what I think would’ve made a real, lasting relationship.”
Griffin freely admitted to being a “cougar,” and shared that she hadn’t dated guys her age since she was in her 30s.
“I’ve only been asked out by younger guys,” she explained. “I kind of am a cougar, which to me just means you have the freedom to choose the person that you want as opposed to the age bracket that society tells you is the only option for you.”
Griffin noted she has always been honest about her age on dating apps.
“I put 64 on my profile, and when I went on those dates, every one of them was at least 20 years younger,” she shared. “What am I gonna do? I can’t let this bangin’ body go to waste.”
Griffin settled her divorce from Bick — who’s 18 years younger than her — in January.
Last October, the “My Life on the D-List” star exclusively told Page Six that the split had devastated her.
“The divorce is what’s kicking my ass mentally,” she shared at the time. “I thought I was going to be with this guy forever. I’m heartbroken, I admit it.”
She added, “I just didn’t think I’d be alone at this stage of the game, but hey, that’s on me. And I guess, I obviously have [to take] full responsibility.”
