The House overwhelmingly passed a resolution to affirm that antisemitism are synonymous, in another vote to support Israel in its war on Gaza. 

The vote was 311 to 14, with 92 Democrats voting ‘present’ and 17 members not voting. 

Thirteen Democrats, including Reps. Jamaal Bowman, N.Y., Cori Bush, Mo., Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, N.Y., and Rashida Tlaib, Mich., voted against the measure. 

One Republican, Rep. Thomas Massie, Ky., voted against it. 

The resolution, introduced by Jewish Republicans David Kustoff, R-Tenn., and Max Miller, R-Ohio, both condemns antisemitism and ‘clearly and firmly states that anti-Zionism is antisemitism.’

Ahead of the vote Massie posted a meme with rapper Drake suggesting Congress has done more to support Zionism than American Patriotism. 

A group of Jewish Democrats, including Reps. Jerry Nadler and Dan Goldman, both of New York, and Jamie Raskin of Maryland voted ‘present’ on the resolution and called it the ‘latest unserious attempt by Republicans to weaponize Jewish pain.’

They noted that last week the House already passed a resolution asserting that ‘denying Israel’s right to exist is a form of antisemitism.’ 

The group also noted that there are Jewish anti-Zionists, including the Satmar Sect, who are ‘quite obviously not anti-Semitic.’ 

Some liberals have expressed concerns that such sentiment could lead to characterizing any criticism of the Israeli government as antisemitism.

The Merriam-Webster definition of anti-Zionism is ‘opposition to the establishment or support of the state of Israel.’ The definition for antisemitism is listed as ‘hostility to or prejudice against Jewish people.’

The resolution was brought forth after the Anti-Defamation League reported a stark increase in antisemitic incidents since the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. 

It came as House Republicans brought in Jewish students to talk about antisemitism on their university campuses. 

One MIT student said she had to leave her doctoral group because her group members told her ‘the people at the Nova music festival deserve to die because they were partying on stolen lands.’ 

A New York University student told reporters: ‘I hear calls to gas the Jews and I am told that Hitler was right.’
