Police confirmed there were children inside the day care at the time of the shooting.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A woman is dead after a shooting near a day care in the city’s Ribault area Tuesday afternoon, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
Police said around 12:30 p.m., officers responded to the 3400 block of Winton Drive regarding a person shot. When officers arrived, they found a woman around 35 years old with a single gunshot wound to the chest, police said.
The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department took the victim to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.
Investigators said an individual was removing items from a truck in front of the day care, including a firearm, when the weapon discharged and struck the victim in the chest.
Police said there was no argument between the individuals involved, and the circumstances leading up to the shooting are under investigation.
Police did confirm there were children inside the day care at the time of the shooting.
The individual who discharged the weapon remained at the scene and was detained for police questioning. Investigators said the incident was isolated and there is no threat to the community.
Police said they believe the victim was affiliated with the day care and was involved in a long-term domestic relationship with the individual who was detained.
The State Attorney’s Office is coordinating with police to determine whether charges will be filed.
The day care is across the street from Ribault High School and Sallye B. Mathis Elementary.
