The Los Angeles Rams find themselves in a waiting game as they anticipate a possible return from retirement by Aaron Donald. However, the team has opted not to pressure the three-time Defensive Player of the Year with a strict deadline for making this pivotal decision.
In a recent update on NFL Game Day Kickoff, insider Ian Rapoport highlighted that the Rams are comfortable without an immediate answer from Donald. “The Rams have not imposed a timeline for Aaron Donald’s decision because a definitive answer isn’t necessary at this moment,” Rapoport explained.
The team isn’t in a precarious position regarding their defensive line, ensuring they’re prepared irrespective of Donald’s choice. Rapoport noted, “The Rams aren’t pausing any roster adjustments in hopes of his return. Their defensive lineup, featuring Myles Garrett among others, is robust and ready. Donald’s comeback would simply add to their depth.”
Whether Donald decides in the coming weeks or later during the season, the Rams are prepared to adapt seamlessly. Rapoport emphasized, “The Rams are open to having him back whenever he decides, be it before or during the season. Welcoming him back is desirable but not essential at this point, so no strict schedule is set.”
Donald’s potential return poses a daunting prospect for the NFL’s other 31 starting quarterbacks. The mere idea of him rejoining the Rams as a bonus could send shivers through opposing teams, underscoring the heightened challenge they would face.
The Rams’ front seven is loaded. They have Kobie Turner, Poona Ford, and Braden Fiske listed as defensive lineman in their 3-4 scheme. Behind them are Myles Garrett, Byron Young, Omar Speights, and Nate Landman, who had a breakout season in 2025 listed as linebackers.
Of course, Garrett will mostly be rushing the passer.
Ever since the Cleveland Browns traded Garrett to LA, Donald coming out of retirement has been the talk of the town.
The saga has lasted over two months and there is still a chance the story won’t reach its end for several weeks or even months. Donald is in the midst of testing his body and has even participated in an official workout with the Rams this summer.
As Rapoport said, the Rams don’t need Donald but a reunion with the eight-time All-Pro would be a Hollywood movie. Make no mistake, the 35-year-old isn’t looking to come out of retirement to be a rotational player.
