CHICAGO (WLS) — ABC 7 Chicago is seeking a seasoned general assignment reporter who can genuinely connect with our viewers, contributing to our top-rated news team.
The right candidate will be a vibrant journalist, skilled communicator, and captivating storyteller, driven by a deep commitment to factual and ethical reporting.
This role involves close collaboration with producers, assignment editors, and other newsroom leaders to create impactful stories.
The prospective reporter must fully grasp the influential role of broadcasters and their duty to the communities they engage with.
The position requires flexibility, as reporting duties will span across various platforms and time slots, including early mornings, nights, and weekends.
This is a full-time staff position. The position is covered under the Company’s collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA.
This role is considered on-site, which means the employee will work from a company-designated location on an ongoing basis.

ABC7/WLS-TV Chicago is the No. 1 local news source and most-watched television station in Chicago. With top-rated daily newscasts spanning decades and the largest social media presence in the market with more than 3.5 million Facebook followers, ABC7 Eyewitness News provides breaking news, investigative reporting, weather, politics, traffic and sports in the multiplatform space to Chicago, the suburbs and northwest Indiana.
Responsibilities:
-On-air performance
-Researching, Writing and Reporting
Basic Qualifications:
-Exceptional reporting, writing and interviewing skills
-Must know how to source and generate impactful enterprise leads, and create impactful content utilizing the latest investigative tools, including data journalism.
-You must be tenacious in your ability to uncover stories through investigation and research
-Be an expert in telling high-impact stories and in breaking news coverage, and demonstrate that ability in the field
-Report, write, capture visual content, edit and produce stories for multiple platforms on deadline, such as owned and distributed digital, streaming and social platforms
-Active in using social media for promotion and news gathering
-Demonstrated ability to move the audience between linear and digital platforms
-A collaborative self-starter
-Ensures that all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality
-Strong commitment to the community, expected to represent the station and participate at various community events
-Must be open to working early mornings, nights and weekends.
Preferred Qualification:
-Minimum 3 years of reporting experience in a large market
-Ability and knowledge of shooting and editing a plus
Required Education:
-Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience with a preferred emphasis in journalism or a related field.

The pay rate for this role in Chicago, IL is $55.29 to $79.33 per hour. The base pay actually offered may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, among other factors.
