Damaurea Grant was arrested in North Carolina in October 2024. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced he had been extradited.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The man accused of fatally shooting Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Corrections Officer Brad McNew has been extradited to Duval County to face multiple felony charges, including first-degree murder. After he was transferred to Florida, JSO placed Demaurea Grant in McNew’s handcuffs, calling it a “symbolic reminder of the life he took.”
Grant, a 30-year-old from North Carolina, was taken into custody there following the Oct. 12 shooting but initially fought extradition. On Tuesday, JSO task force officers transported him back to Florida.
Grant has been indicted by a grand jury and now faces charges of first-degree murder, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. If convicted, he could face the death penalty. He is being housed in Clay County at this time.
McNew was killed after stepping in to intervene during a domestic dispute at a gas station on Jacksonville’s Northside, according to JSWO. The woman involved, 26-year-old Makayla Huggins, who was driving the vehicle from which the shots were fired, pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact. She is scheduled for sentencing later this month.
JSO says McNew is remembered by his wife, son, fellow officers, and many friends. The agency expressed gratitude to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, which is housing Grant as he awaits trial.
