(NEXSTAR) — After a long wait for fans, the NASCAR Xfinity Series returned to Mexico City for the first time since 2008 for The Chilango 150.

Fan favorite Daniel Suárez, after a qualifying crash, had to start in the back of the field in his backup car.

It wasn’t looking good throughout the race for Suárez as Conor Kvapil and Sammy Smith would go on to win the first and second stages, respectively.

That would all change at the start of stage three when he overtook Ty Gibbs and Connor Zilisch for the lead.

Suárez kept the momentum from that exchange going throughout the final stage and went on to win the whole race.

“It’s very, very special to be here for all of my people and all these people that have supported me for many, many years,” Suárez said.

While he took the moment Saturday night to celebrate by smashing a taco piñata in Victory Circle, his work in Mexico City is far from over.

He’s looking to take his first-ever NASCAR Cup Series victory in Sunday’s Viva Mexico 250.

As for the Xfinity Series, it heads to Pennsylvania next week for the Explore the Pocono Mountains 250.

You can catch that race on The CW Saturday, June 21, at 3:30 p.m. ET.
