AG Letitia James Dodges Questions on ‘Cornell 7’ Probe With Smile

Attorney General Letitia James laughed awkwardly and declined to answer questions about the Cornell 7 rape case, refusing to confirm reports that she may be required to recuse herself and retain an outside attorney.

“We’re here today to talk about elections, early elections,” James told The Post on Sunday as she campaigned in Crown Heights.

When asked whether she was refusing to respond, James repeated, “We’re here to talk about early elections.”

“I want to talk about early elections. Cornell’s very serious, and we’ll have something to say about that too,” she added.

James also declined to say whether she planned to recuse herself. “We’re gonna have something to say about that too, but today is about early elections,” she told The Post.

James was appointed by Gov. Kathy Hochul to investigate allegations from a Cornell University student identified only as Jane Doe, who says she was raped by seven fraternity members in 2024, according to sources.

The attorney general faced criticism after it emerged that she had posted social media comments expressing sympathy for the alleged victim before being appointed to lead the investigation. Critics argued the remarks raised questions about her impartiality, while President Trump and others called on her to recuse herself.

James’ office said Saturday that the attorney general had been looking for outside counsel before anyone suggested she should step aside from the investigation. James, however, has not publicly addressed the controversy.
