CULLMAN, Ala. (WIAT) — A 99-year murder sentence for a man convicted of killing his stepfather in his own home has been upheld by an appellate court, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced Wednesday.

William Thomas Maddux, 35, was convicted last year in the murder of Perry Shoemake, who died in a shooting in his home in Cullman on November 12, 2017. According to Marshall, Maddux went to the residence of his mother and Shoemake and was intoxicated at the time of his visit.

“Maddux refused to leave, and his stepfather went inside to call 911,” Marshall said. “Maddux broke into the house and shot and killed his stepfather who was on the phone with 911 when he died.”

After Shoemake’s death, Maddux suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, causing him to be hospitalized for over a month. After being discharged from the hospital, Maddux turned himself over to the police.

Maddux’s attorneys had previously appealed the decision. However, the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the conviction in August.
