BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The law enforcement agency investigating the death of an 18-year-old who was shot by a police officer in Homewood last month is expected to conclude at the end of the week.

In court documents filed Tuesday, attorneys for the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency stated that its investigation into the shooting death of Jabari Peoples would likely wrap up Friday. By then, much-anticipated footage of the shooting is expected to be released.

“Director (Chris) Inabinett expects that SBI’s investigation into the relevant officer-involved shooting will conclude by this Friday, August 1, 2025,” the motion stated. “At that time, pursuant to standard Agency practice in SBI’s officer-involved shooting investigations, ALEA will release SBI’s investigative file – including any and all body-worn camera footage obtained from the City of Homewood – to the City of Homewood’s Police Department and to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.”

Peoples was shot during an interaction with a Homewood police officer on June 22 outside the city’s soccer field. According to an independent autopsy, Peoples was shot once in the back.

Police have maintained that Peoples reached for a gun prior to being shot, but not firearm has been recovered.

The community has asked that bodycam footage of the shooting be released. Until this court motion, ALEA had denied requests for the footage to be released, citing its investigation as the reason. No date has been given for when the footage would be released.

“From the moment Jabari was taken from us his family has battled for transparency,” said Leroy Maxwell, attorney representing Peoples’ family. “We ultimately had to take that battle to the courts, as a result we are hopeful that the family will gain some transparency on Friday when ALEA concludes their investigation.”

The next court hearing in the case is set for Aug. 4.
