LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — The Limestone County Sheriff’s Office says after 12 hours of negotiations, a man surrendered himself to authorities.

LCSO said at about 6:45 p.m., Limestone County 911 received an emergency call reporting domestic violence at a home on Westmeade Lane in Athens.

According to police, the caller said that a man was armed with a knife and a gun and was trying to kill his wife.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they tried to make contact with the man, identified as 51-year-old Andre Dupree Foster, and the woman.

LCSO said Foster refused to open the door.

Deputies were able to briefly speak with Foster through the door, during which LCSO said he made remarks indicating he was suicidal and continued to refuse to leave the home.

Afterwards, deputies said they heard a single gunshot from inside the home.

However, LCSO found that the woman had already escaped and was safe at a neighbor’s home.

Due to the severity of the situation and the presence of firearms, Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin, the Limestone County SWAT team, crisis negotiators and the Athens Police Department responded to help.

Foster had barricaded himself inside the home and continued to resist surrender for several hours.

LCSO said after nearly 12 hours of negotiations, he peacefully surrendered without further incident.

Foster was taken into custody and taken to the Limestone County Jail, where he is charged with second-degree domestic violence (Assault).

A bond has not yet been set for Foster.
