CANTON, Texas (KETK) – A 13-year-old boy with terminal brain cancer was sworn in as an honorary Deputy by Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office on Friday.
Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel was diagnosed with cancer when he was six years old. In 2022, he set a goal to be sworn in by every law enforcement agency in the country.
“I want to make other people happy and help people out,” Daniel said.
DJ was sworn in as an honorary deputy and received six other titles from Van Zandt County agencies, giving him a total of 924.
“What a honor, I mean really it is, to stand beside somebody that has such positivity like that young man does, and the roadblocks that have been thrown his way and he just keeps overcoming them, and it’s just it’s just such an honor, words can’t really express it,” Van Zandt County Sheriff Kevin Bridger said.
DJ will continue his journey in Upshur County on Saturday where he’ll be sworn in and receive the key to the city of Gilmer. He wants to leave everyone with these words of wisdom.
“Believe in God, stay out of trouble, listen to your parents and live a great life,” DJ said.
