Andy Reid's wife lifts the lid on Christmas plans and Chiefs' season

Amid a challenging NFL season for the Kansas City Chiefs, holiday cheer might seem scarce at Arrowhead Stadium on Christmas Day. However, Andy Reid’s wife assures that the Reid family will still embrace the festive spirit.

Despite the Chiefs’ season effectively concluding on a disappointing note earlier this month, the team is still gearing up to hit the field for a holiday matchup.

Star player Travis Kelce and his teammates will once again have to delay their Christmas festivities as they prepare to face their division rivals, the Denver Broncos, in a highly anticipated game scheduled for December 25.

In the lead-up to this Christmas clash, Tammy Reid, the wife of the Chiefs’ head coach, shared that the family’s holiday celebrations will deviate from tradition this year.

She offered a glimpse into the Reid family’s holiday plans, revealing that matching pajamas are a staple in their celebrations—a tradition in which even Coach Reid participates.

‘Since we have a game on Christmas, we’re gonna delay our Christmas until the 26th,’ Tammy told The Daily Mail, speaking from Raising Cane’s holiday bike giveaway, surprising 100 children in Kansas City.

Reid and the Chiefs endured a nightmare season, being eliminated from playoff contention

‘We have 10 grandchildren that live in town and they will come over with their parents and we will let them open their gifts from us. Then we’ll have a nice dinner together and just hang out probably in our pajamas. It’s the best thing ever, stay in your jammies all day, right?

‘All of us always have matching jammies – coach, me, all the grandkids, their moms, their dads – every year.’

This year, she revealed, the Reid family will be slipping into matching sets of green plaid to celebrate the holiday.

She continued: ‘We usually have a Christmas Eve program, where we just read from the Bible the story of Christ and the kids may perform some songs.

‘We’re food people during Christmas and Easter, so I’ve already had some of the grandkids over and we’ve made chocolate covered cherries – hand dipped them in the chocolate – so that’s kind of a fun.’

It is easy to imagine that the usually joyous period will be be slightly tainted in Chiefs Kingdom this year amid the team’s season-ending woes.

Reid’s side were eliminated from playoff contention – for the first time since 2014 – with a crushing 16-13 defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 15.

To make matters worse, the Chiefs lost superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a season-ending double ligament tear in the dying minutes of their desperate comeback attempt.

Their misery was compounded on Sunday when they followed up their postseason heartbreak with a blowout 26-9 defeat to the 3-12 Tennessee Titans.

But Tammy brushed off the devastating campaign as she insisted she and Coach Reid have more than enough to be grateful for over the past few years.

‘You know what, you win some, you lose some and the season is what it is,’ she candidly assessed.

‘But we have been to five Super Bowls in six years. You know, I’ve got three rings on my finger right now and who could really ask for more than that,’ she jokingly added with a chuckle. ‘We are truly blessed.

‘The guys have given it their all and coach has too. It was a little disappointing but you know, they will come back bigger faster or stronger next year.’

And while their may be some disappointed fans in Kansas City this year, Tammy ensured that she still spread some joy.

Tammy, who has been married to Coach Reid since 1981, helped to create memories that will last a lifetime for many boys and girls in the Chiefs’ local community last week.

Tammy – wearing a Chiefs jacket and her ever-present Super Bowl rings – worked with Raising Cane’s to gift 100 bikes and helmets at Operation Breakthrough in Kansas City.

‘It’s important to do things and get back to our community,’ she said. ‘That’s what I love about Cane’s, is that they asked me to come and that it is in my community.

‘I like to get back to anybody in Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas, just to give back to our community right here.’

She added: ‘When coach and I got here 13 years ago, they already had an amazing organization called the Chiefs Women’s Organization. It’s the players and the coaches’ gals and significant others. It’s some of our administration, the people that work for the Chiefs.

‘We go out into the community and do like four or five or six community events with different charities and organizations around here. So it’s been a really great thing to walk into when we got here.’
