AOC Asserts Ethical Duty of Networks to Abstain from Airing Trump’s Election Speech

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) expressed concerns on Tuesday regarding upcoming televised addresses by President Trump, emphasizing that television networks have an “ethical obligation” to refrain from broadcasting his speech if it lacks a foundation in truth and factual accuracy.

During a conversation with a reporter on Capitol Hill, the prominent member of the progressive “Squad” stated, “I don’t think we should be enabling the dissemination of falsehoods about our election.”

Ocasio-Cortez proposed that media organizations assess Trump’s oratory carefully before deciding on its suitability for broadcast.

She elaborated, noting, “Many news outlets often receive transcripts in advance, and I believe we have a moral duty to avoid airing content that seeks to delegitimize our election unless it’s supported by substantial evidence and facts.”

“Ultimately, the decision should rest on the content of his address,” she added.

Earlier Tuesday, Trump confirmed that his planned address to the nation Thursday night will concern “free and fair elections,” among other topics.

“It’s really, really big for us and our country has to shape up,” the president told reporters in the Oval Office. “But that’s what we’re going to be talking about.”

“It doesn’t get bigger, because without free and fair elections, you don’t have a country,” he added. “We’ll be discussing other things too. But it’s going to be a very big announcement.”
