Texas school district apologizes for sending student data to wrong families

AUSTIN (KXAN) Austin Independent School District families are no longer receiving other students’ transcripts and data, according to the district.

A concerned parent of a Bowie High School student reached out to KXAN on March 2. They said they received multiple letters with multiple students’ data. According to the parent, the letters all appeared to be about transfers between AISD schools. The letter the parent shared with KXAN was signed by Dr. Melvin Bedford, the principal of Austin High School.

Later that day, AISD sent another letter to Austin High School families. In response to a request for information, the district provided KXAN with a copy of the letter.

It read, in part, “Earlier this afternoon, we inadvertently disclosed student information to individuals listed on the ‘All Guardian Call List’ rather than just the affected families.”

It continued, “As school leaders, we understand we’re trusted with your student’s information and we take that responsibility seriously. We have reached out personally to both families affected to apologize for the error.”

This message was also signed by Bedford.

AISD confirmed that a link including students’ data is now inactive, and any families who received the data cannot access it.
