The case was solved after the Cold Case Unit chose to review it again earlier in 2025.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office arrested the man tied to a cold case murder from Nov. 2015 Tuesday, they announced in a press release.

24-year-old Kurt Dean died at the hospital after he was shot while attempting an armed robbery at a business on Edgewood Avenue South on Nov. 19, 2015.

Dean was shot by the store owner in self-defense, according to JSO. He and an accomplice fled, but Dean did not survive his gunshot wound.

While the store owner was not charged, police sought Dean’s accomplice in the robbery, intending to charge him for his role in causing Dean’s death.

JSO says that after they reviewed all available information and evidence, the case went cold.

However, the Cold Case Unit selected Dean’s case to pursue again earlier this year. JSO says additional interviews and a review of the evidence led them to identify  34-year-old Radariaus Javonn McGauley as the accomplice.

McGauley was already in custody on unrelated charges, but he was “re-arrested” on Tuesday and charged with felony murder.

“This case serves to highlight the commitment of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to solving violent crime and holding those responsible accountable for their actions,” JSO said in the release. “The professional relationship between our detectives and the State Attorney’s Office was instrumental in the review of this case and the ability to bring closure and provide answers to those impacted by this crime.”
