SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A woman, along with an incarcerated individual, are facing multiple charges for allegedly mailing drug-laced letters to a San Diego County jail facility, authorities said.
The incident was uncovered earlier this month when deputies intercepted suspicious mail intended for an inmate at the George Bailey Detention Facility in Otay Mesa.
According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, deputies assigned to the Sheriff’s Mail Processing Center flagged a batch of mail that appeared to be fictitious legal correspondence intended for an inmate named Aaron Beek. Upon closer inspection, deputies discovered materials soaked with substances that they suspected were narcotics.
The Sheriff’s Detention Investigations Unit (DIU) immediately launched a criminal investigation, which led to the identification of Jacqueline Richardson, 45, as the individual allegedly responsible for mailing the drugs to Beek. Richardson is a San Diego resident.
On Jan. 16, DIU detectives executed a search warrant at Richardson’s home. During the search, authorities found additional narcotics, including powdered fentanyl, M30 fentanyl pills and methamphetamine further evidence connecting her to the illicit mail operation.
Richardson was arrested and booked into the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility in Santee on multiple charges, including sending a controlled substance into a jail and possession of a controlled substance. Beek, who remains in custody, was also rearrested on criminal charges related to the incident.
Officials with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office are now reminding the public that sending controlled substances into a jail is a serious felony offense, carrying a potential sentence of up to six years in custody.
An investigation into this incident remains ongoing. Authorities are working to uncover more details about the operation.
