Amarion Mitchell, 22, suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the May 26 shooting at Westwood Apartments, and died days later in a local hospital, according to JSO.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man already behind bars at the Duval County Jail faces new charges, including second-degree murder, in connection to a deadly shooting that happened at an apartment complex on Jacksonville’s Westside last month, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday.
Muhammad Thomas, 22, faces charges of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, shooting or throwing deadly missiles and tampering with evidence in connection to the shooting, jail records show.
Amarion Mitchell, 22, suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the May 26 shooting at Westwood Apartments, and was taken to a local hospital by members of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department afterward in critical condition.
“Several days after the shooting, Mitchell died from his injuries in the hospital,” JSO said in a Facebook post. “He had just turned 22 years old earlier in the month.”
After JSO’s homicide detectives combed through evidence and interviewed people who may have been involved in the shooting, the sheriff’s office said detectives identified Thomas as the gunman in the shooting.
Records show Thomas was arrested on the day of the shooting for sexual battery stemming from a separate incident.
“We’ll work closely with our partners at the State Attorney’s Office to bring justice to Mitchell’s loved ones,” JSO’s post states.
