In a tragic incident near Bedford, England, two passenger trains collided on Friday, resulting in the death of at least one person and leaving nearly 90 others injured. The collision has prompted a swift response from local authorities.
At approximately 5:15 p.m. local time, the East of England Ambulance Service was alerted to the crash at Elstow, close to Bedford. Recognizing the severity of the situation, responders quickly declared it a “major incident” and dispatched emergency services to the site.
According to officials, the collision’s aftermath was severe: one person tragically lost their life at the scene, while 11 others sustained very serious injuries. Additionally, there were 22 people who were seriously injured, and 56 who received minor injuries.
The town of Bedford, located approximately 60 miles north of London, is now grappling with the aftermath of this devastating event that has left many in shock.

All the patients with the most serious injuries have been taken from the scene to hospital.
The ambulance service said it sent numerous resources to the scene, including more than 20 ambulances, specialist hazardous area response teams and six air ambulances.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected, and we thank all emergency service colleagues for their swift response,” the ambulance service wrote in a statement.
The Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed its crews were also responding.
“Please avoid the area,” fire officials wrote in a statement on X.
Sources told The Telegraph the train driver was on the phone with maintenance staff discussing a safety issue at the time of the crash.
