Aurora, Illinois news: Knife-wielding suspect shot, injured by police at South Broadway, North Avenue, officials say

In Aurora, Illinois, a tense situation unfolded on Wednesday afternoon when police officers were involved in a shooting incident with a knife-wielding suspect. The confrontation occurred around 12:35 p.m. near the intersection of South Broadway and North Avenue.

According to Aurora police, officers were in the area to investigate a “criminal matter” when the incident took place. As the investigation progressed, the area saw a significant police presence, prompting officials to advise the public to avoid the vicinity and use alternative routes.

Authorities later clarified that the situation stemmed from an officer-involved shooting, assuring the public that there was no ongoing threat to their safety. The suspect, who reportedly barricaded himself and brandished a knife, was shot and injured by police during the confrontation.

An update provided in a news conference at 4 p.m. detailed that the suspect’s actions led to the police response, resulting in him being wounded. As this investigation continues, police are working to piece together the events that led to the shooting.

Aurora, Illinois police officials said there was a large police presence at an officer-involved shooting Wednesday at South Broadway and North Avenue.

During a news conference update at 4 p.m., officials said officers encountered a man who was barricaded and later displayed a knife. Shots were fired by police, and the suspect was shot and wounded.

The suspect was taken to a hospital after police and fire first responders provided medical aid, officials said. The officers involved were also taken to hospitals for evaulation.

The Fox Valley Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the police-involved shooting.
