Husband slammed for demanding wife cook him 'elaborate' meals

Is it 1955 or 2025? This question might cross your mind after hearing about a recent Reddit post where a newlywed woman sought advice on how to handle her husband’s demanding attitude toward her cooking duties.

In a post shared on the r/AmIOverreacting forum, the perplexed wife explained, “I mainly handle the cooking in our relationship, and I actually enjoy it, but my husband expects me to prepare elaborate meals whenever he feels like eating late at night.”

“I’m talking about dishes like gnocchi, pies, and meat wraps,” she elaborated. “While I wouldn’t normally mind, the issue is that I’m exhausted after a full day of work, and cooking at midnight is just too much for me.”

Contrary to the old adage that suggests keeping your husband happy is the key to a happy life, the woman was taken aback when her husband seemed surprised by her reluctance. She had gently reminded him that when she said “I do,” it wasn’t a commitment to being an on-call chef, especially after a tiring workday.

The saying isn’t happy husband, happy life so the OP was shocked when she told her hubby nicely that she didn’t sign up for being a short-order cook when she said “I do” and doesn’t want to be expected to cook on demand, especially after a long day at work.

Well, that didn’t go over well with this man-child, who pushed back, saying he was used to his mom always whipping up something in the kitchen for him and he expected his wife to do the same.

“It caused a fight and I told him I’m not doing it anymore. He now seems very distant,” she wrote.

Yikes.

Over 600 Redditors ran to the comment section to side with this frustrated wife.

“NOR [not overreacting]. Why can’t he cook himself elaborate meals at night if he wants it so badly?” one person wrote.

“Imagine a world where your rest matters more than his late night cravings,” another joked at the absurdity of this situation.

“If my husband ever said ‘but my mom ‘insert anything,’ he would be sent back to her,” chimed in another commenter.

Sadly, this isn’t the first husband and certainly won’t be the last to show behavior that makes today’s young generation of women want to opt out of marriage.

“NOR. I would laugh in my husband’s face if he demanded I cook an elaborate meal at midnight. Girl grow a spine and tell him to pound sand,” quipped someone else.

When a millennial mom of two asked her husband to help her out with the kids, his answer was beyond embarrassing.

“In the morning, they get all my attention, and it’s not too bad, but in the afternoons after their naps when I’m trying to work, keeps them entertained and taken care of it’s quite difficult. We’re actively working on a different solution, but this is what we have to do now,” the OP wrote in the r/AITA forum on Reddit.

By the time she finishes work, her husband is home and she starts getting dinner ready.

“Tonight, I was in the middle of cooking, hands dirty, stove and oven on, and he asked if I could help change one of the kids while he held the other cause he was being fussy. I told him no, that I do this all day by myself AND work, and all I need is 20 minutes to cook for everyone.”

The husband actually got upset that his busy wife couldn’t stop what she was doing to help him with their kids.
