Respected WABC anchor Bill Ritter is expected to reveal his retirement on Friday evening’s show due to Alzheimer’s disease, as reported by The Post.
The 76-year-old journalist, who joined WABC in June 1998, took a step back from the 11 p.m. newscast in March 2025 after a quarter-century at the helm of the nightly news.
Insiders have indicated that it remains uncertain if Ritter, a father of three, will disclose his Alzheimer’s diagnosis during the broadcast.
His colleagues describe him as a “true journalist,” admired for his dedication and involvement in enhancing the quality of the newscast.
“He embodies everything you’d hope for in a New York City anchor. He sets a benchmark for all of us,” shared one source.
Ritter took over the 11 p.m. news for Bill Beutel in 1999. He currently anchors the 6 p.m. broadcast with Liz Cho.
