WASHINGTON — Big Lots will open 73 more stores this week as it continues its retail comeback.

Variety Wholesaler, which acquired more than 200 Big Lots stores as part of a deal last December, reopened dozens of stores over the last month. Starting on Thursday, May 15, an additional 73 stores will reopen their doors across the U.S.

But that’s just the beginning.

More stores are expected to open through early June and in the months to follow leading up to a “grand celebration” in the fall, the company previously said in a press release.

“We’re thrilled to bring the Big Lots! brand back to life by offering more deals than ever, lots of famous brands and a new apparel department for the entire family,” Lisa Seigies, president and CEO of Variety Wholesalers, said in a press release. “We’re opening stores quickly so we can serve the community. We know the stores won’t be perfect to start, but each week we’ll add more new products as we build towards the grand opening celebration in the fall.

Newly reopened stores are set to pop up in North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, West Virginia, and more in the coming months.

Big Lots filed for bankruptcy in 2024 and closed more than 400 stores last year. The retailer, which mostly sells furniture, home decor and some other items, previously said the closures were precipitated by economic pressures, including high inflation and reduced consumer spending on home and seasonal products — critical revenue streams for the retailer.
