The brand’s new owner is continuing the revival of Big Lots with a third wave of store openings, with more locations coming soon.
WASHINGTON — Big Lots will open dozens more stores in June as it continues its retail comeback.
Variety Wholesaler, which acquired more than 200 Big Lots stores as part of a deal last December, has reopened dozens of stores over the past few months. In its third wave of store reopening’s, the company says an additional 78 locations will welcome customers again on June 5 across nine states.
More stores are expected to open in the following months, leading up to a “grand celebration” in the fall, the company previously said in a press release.
“We’re thrilled to bring the Big Lots! brand back to life by offering more deals than ever, lots of famous brands and a new apparel department for the entire family,” Lisa Seigies, president and CEO of Variety Wholesalers, said in a press release. “We’re opening stores quickly so we can serve the community. We know the stores won’t be perfect to start, but each week we’ll add more new products as we build towards the grand opening celebration in the fall.
Big Lots filed for bankruptcy in 2024 and closed more than 400 stores last year. The retailer, which mostly sells furniture, home decor and some other items, previously said the closures were precipitated by economic pressures, including high inflation and reduced consumer spending on home and seasonal products — critical revenue streams for the retailer.
