() President Donald Trump said he would support White House border czar Tom Homan arresting Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom amid their clash over the ongoing protests in Los Angeles.

“The president of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting governor. This is a day I hoped I would never see in America,” Newsom said in a post on social platform X. “don’t care if you’re a Democrat or a Republican this is a line we cannot cross as a nation this is an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism.”

Newsom previously announced that the state of California would sue the Trump administration for deploying the National Guard without his approval, and argued along with other Democrats including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass that the decision made things worse.

Trump has since deployed 2,000 more National Guard troops to L.A. as the protests continue for a fourth day.

In response to warnings from Trump and Homan that state and local officials could be arrested if they were found violating the law, Newsom dared the administration to carry out his arrest, saying that he cared about his community.

Bill O’Reilly joined “On Balance” on Monday to discuss the clash between Newsom and Trump. He argued that Newsom is pushing for his arrest because of the publicity it would bring if he runs for president in 2028. He added that it would not be wise to arrest him because no crime was committed.

“He’s trying to consolidate himself as a left-wing martyr,” O’Reilly said. “That’s what he wants, rather than working with the president to quell any kind of potential violence.”
