Man shot, killed by Birmingham police identified

In Birmingham, Alabama, authorities have identified the individual who was shot and killed by a local police officer. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed on Monday morning that the victim was 26-year-old Jamal D’Angelo Williams from Pinson. The incident occurred late Friday night on the 800 block of 45th Street North. Despite being rushed to UAB Hospital for medical attention, Williams succumbed to his injuries.

Officers were called to the scene at approximately 11:25 p.m. following reports of a dispute involving several individuals. Upon arrival, witnesses informed the officers that one of the people involved in the argument was armed. In the subsequent confrontation, an officer discharged their weapon, striking Williams. The Birmingham Police Department has verified that the officer involved in the shooting had an active body camera during the incident.

Police said officers initially were dispatched around 11:25 p.m. on reports of an argument among a group of people. After officers arrived, police said witnesses alerted them that one of the people arguing had a gun. During the ensuing encounter, police shot the man.

Police confirm the officer who shot the man was wearing an activated body camera, according to the BPD.
