A Birmingham resident has been handed a prison sentence of over two years for unlawfully carrying a firearm, despite his status as a convicted felon.
Jerrell Demichael Dunson, aged 47, received a 30-month prison term following his guilty plea to charges of felonious firearm possession.
Details from the plea deal reveal that on October 10, 2022, Dunson was confronted by a Birmingham police officer in a deserted apartment after authorities were alerted to his alleged trespassing.
“The officer requested Dunson’s identification to file an incident report,” the press release noted. “By the time it was discovered he had 14 outstanding misdemeanor warrants, Dunson had already departed the scene.”
Dunson was eventually located in the parking area of Legion Field, where he was discovered carrying a Smith & Wesson .40-caliber pistol. Due to his history of burglary and robbery convictions, Dunson was prohibited from owning or using any firearms.
The ATF investigated the case along with the Birmingham Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kristy M. Peoples prosecuted the case.
