BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A Birmingham man, aged 32, has been sentenced to over a decade in prison due to several firearm-related offenses, according to an announcement by U.S. Attorney Phillip Williams Jr.
Robert Garrett, a local resident, received a 130-month prison sentence following his guilty plea. He faced charges that included two counts for being a felon found with a firearm and a single count related to possessing a gun to further a drug-trafficking operation.
Court records reveal that Garrett was pulled over by Birmingham police during a traffic stop on April 12, 2023. After officers ran his details through the system, they found he had outstanding warrants. Garrett was arrested, and officers reportedly noticed the smell of marijuana emanating from the car.
In the course of their search, officers found firearms and a backpack filled with marijuana. Several months later, on August 3, 2023, agents visited a residence to investigate a federal firearms violation linked to Garrett. They detected marijuana on him and wafting from the house as Garrett greeted them at the door.
Subsequently, authorities secured a search warrant, and upon searching the premises, they uncovered additional marijuana, digital scales, ammunition, and other items.
