Authorities in Arizona have confirmed a shooting incident involving the Border Patrol near the U.S.-Mexico border on Tuesday, leaving one individual critically injured.
The Santa Rita Fire District reported that their team responded to the scene and that the wounded individual was taken into custody.
“The injured party was handed over to a local medical helicopter for swift transport to a regional trauma facility,” stated the fire district.
A trauma center in Tucson, designated as level-one, chose not to disclose any details, while the Associated Press awaits feedback from an additional hospital.
The location of the incident is frequently traversed by drug smugglers and migrants attempting to cross the border unlawfully, leading to regular patrols by border agents.
The shooting involved a Border Patrol agent and a suspect, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department told the Arizona Daily Star. The department said it was working with federal authorities in response to the shooting.
Authorities released no information about the suspect. The shooting comes comes in a month that has seen three shootings — two fatal — by immigration officers involved in the massive Department of Homeland Security enforcement operation in Minnesota.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection did not immediately respond to emails and telephone calls seeking more information.
