BOSTON (AP) — Anticipation was in the air as thousands were set to flood the streets of South Boston on Sunday for the city’s celebrated St. Patrick’s Day parade, a major event showcasing Irish culture and one of the largest festivities of its kind in the United States.

This annual spectacle attracts visitors from all over Massachusetts and beyond, featuring an array of marching bands, colorful floats, veterans’ associations, and local groups that weave their way through the heart of South Boston.

For weeks, city officials have been meticulously planning the event, coordinating with law enforcement, public transit, and emergency services to ensure the safety and smooth flow of the massive gathering expected in the neighborhood.

This parade is more than just a celebration—it’s a cherished tradition for Boston, a city with deep Irish connections. It often coincides with Evacuation Day festivities, marking the 1776 departure of British forces from Boston.

Authorities advised those attending to prepare for road closures and packed public transportation, as the area is expected to be bustling with enthusiastic parade-goers throughout the day.

Last year’s parade drew tens of thousands of attendees and featured dozens of marching groups.

This year’s event was expected to begin late Sunday morning and continue into the afternoon.
