An Indiana judge, who was the target of a shooting alongside his wife, remains resolute in his commitment to the judiciary, despite the assailant still being at large. The incident took place at their residence when shots were fired through the front door.

Judge Steven Meyer of Tippecanoe Superior Court 2 issued a statement on Wednesday expressing his unyielding faith in the judicial system. This affirmation comes in the wake of a terrifying attack that occurred on Sunday, resulting in both him and his wife, Kim, sustaining gunshot injuries and subsequently being hospitalized.

In his message, Meyer declared, “This horrific violence will not shake my belief in the importance of peacefully resolving disputes.” He emphasized his enduring trust in the judicial process, saying, “I remain confident we have the best judicial system in the world, and I am proud to be a part of it.”

The shooting occurred on a Sunday afternoon within their Lafayette home, a community located northwest of Indianapolis, as reported by law enforcement authorities.

During the attack, Judge Meyer, aged 66, suffered a gunshot wound to his arm, while his wife, Kim, was injured in the hip, according to police reports.

A 911 caller reported that someone knocked on the door and claimed they had the couple’s dog before a shot blasted through the door, according to a recording of 911 dispatch audio.

The Meyers were rushed to a local hospital in stable condition, where they are still recovering.

“I want to express my heartfelt thanks to my medical team. I am receiving excellent care and I am improving,” the judge said in his statement Wednesday.

“Kim is also deeply appreciative for the community support, and she too is healing.”

Neither husband nor wife were able to get a look at the shooter, who fled and is still being hunted by authorities. 

No motive or description of the suspect has been released.

Multiple agencies, including local cops, state police, and the FBI, are involved in the active investigation.
