Efforts are underway in Congress to pass a significant piece of legislation backed by President Trump that could alter the voting landscape.

The legislation, known as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (abbreviated as the SAVE Act or the SAVE America Act), has successfully cleared the hurdle of the House of Representatives and now awaits deliberation in the Senate.

Recently, Senate Democrats blocked a proposed amendment that would have mandated voters to present a photo ID for both in-person and mail-in voting—a central aspect of the SAVE Act that many states currently practice.

Additionally, the SAVE Act proposes that individuals must verify their citizenship status upon registering to vote. While federal law stipulates that participants in national elections must be U.S. citizens, it does not currently require them to provide documentary evidence of citizenship.
