Live updates: Senate has enough Democratic votes to end government shutdown; Trump attends Commanders game

Following a prolonged 40-day government shutdown, the Senate has garnered sufficient Democratic support to move towards reopening. This development comes after a rare Saturday session that, despite growing pressure, saw minimal advancement.

A coalition of centrist Democrats, spearheaded by Senators Angus King of Maine—an independent who aligns with the Democrats—Jeanne Shaheen, and Maggie Hassan, both from New Hampshire, brokered an agreement with Republicans from the Senate Appropriations Committee. This bipartisan effort was led by Senator Susan Collins from Maine and aimed to reopen the government by Sunday night.

Senator King noted that it became evident Republicans were unwilling to agree on a deal that would both end the shutdown and prolong the enhanced health insurance subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, which are set to lapse in January.

The repercussions of the shutdown have become more pronounced recently. On Sunday, the Trump administration directed states to halt efforts to distribute Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to over 40 million Americans due to the ongoing shutdown.

Additionally, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) mandated a reduction in air travel across numerous major airports, leading to the cancellation of over 1,000 flights for the second consecutive day on Saturday.

President Trump also went to a Sunday evening NFL game featuring the Washington Commanders and Detroit Lions, according to pool reports.
