Bree and Wrigley Share Long-Awaited Kiss: Fans Celebrate the Romantic Milestone

It’s widely recognized that Tell Me Lies thrives on unexpected plot twists, and the third season of Meaghan Oppenheimer’s acclaimed Hulu drama delivered a delightful surprise by introducing a charming new romance. Midway through the season, viewers found themselves cheering for the unexpected pairing of Bree (Cat Missal) and Wrigley (Spencer House).

The seeds of this budding relationship were sown with a heartfelt conversation at a bus stop during the Season 3 premiere, followed by engaging, flirtatious exchanges in their shared photography class. However, it wasn’t until the conclusion of Episode 4 that Tell Me Lies confirmed Bree and Wrigley had taken their friendship to the next level. A flashback to 2015 revealed Wrigley made a significant call to Bree before her wedding, showing he still harbored feelings for her long after their college days. With Conrad Fisher (Christopher Briney) no longer a presence, Wrigley emerges as the new leading man of longing on TV!

In Episode 5, Wrigley escorted Bree to her mother’s residence in 2009, culminating in a charming, movie-worthy pool scene. By Episode 6, fans were finally treated to the much-anticipated first kiss between the pair, and for WrigBree/Brigley enthusiasts, it was undoubtedly worth the anticipation!

Warning: Spoilers for Tell Me Lies Season 3, Episode 6 lie ahead.

The sixth episode, titled “I Don’t Cry When I’m Sad Anymore,” reconnects with the group of friends on Valentine’s Day, setting an immediate tone for the episode. Dressed in their best emo attire for an anti-Valentine’s Day celebration, the evening takes a turn when Tegan (Biana Nugara) proposes a provocative drinking game. This leads to a disagreement between Bree and Evan (Branden Cook), as well as a rift between Lucy (Grace Van Patten) and Pippa (Sonia Mena). As the group disperses, Bree finds herself in an awkward situation walking home with both Evan and Wrigley. What a situation!

As Wrigley respectfully trails behind the couple, a frustrated Evan presses Bree about why she didn’t tell him she reunited with her mom. His skepticism about their time together upsets Bree, and Evan ultimately asks Wrigley to walk her home so he can cool off. Just like that, Wrigley and Bree are alone together again, and Bree wastes little time asking for his input.

“I think wanting a relationship with your mother is an extremely normal thing for you to want,” Wrigley assures Bree, disapproving of the fact that Evan seems threatened by the budding connection. Rather than fully side with Bree though, Wrigley also notes how “fucked up” it is that she’s confiding in him a mere two hours after he asked her not to. “It’s not really my business if you’re upset or not, right? Because this, you and me, it’s not a thing,” he stresses.

“I’m mad at everybody. We’re all making terrible decisions,” Wrigley continues in an iconic speech that calls out Evan, Lucy, Stephen, and even Bree. “You’re yelling at teenage girls instead of the fucking 45-year-old creep who traumatized you… I think Pippa’s the only one who isn’t fucking up right now. She’s been like the perfect girlfriend and meanwhile my dumb ass is over here just fucking taking her for granted and spending too much time with you.” While Wrigley doesn’t explicitly admit his feelings for Bree, he says enough to suggest the chemistry they share isn’t in Bree’s head. His blunt words also inspire her to head to Oliver (Tom Ellis) house, where she confronts his wife Marianne (Gabriella Pession) about his relationship with 17-year-old Amanda (Iris Apatow).

After an emotional, cathartic chat with Marianne, Bree wakes the next morning at her professor’s house and calls Wrigley to come get her. She apologizes and matches his vulnerability, admitting, “I didn’t know who else to call, because I wanted to talk to you. Because you make things better, and it’s confusing. I think you’re making me kind of confused about how I feel. I’m sorry.”

Wrigley tells Bree to stop apologizing and hugs her. The two move their faces closer, then pull back, well aware that if they cross that line there’s no going back. With palpable tension between them, Wrigley finally goes in for the kiss as “Those to Come” by The Shins sets the mood. BRB SWOONING!

It’s not easy to pull a new romance out of left field three seasons in, make the connection feel so established in such a short time, and have viewers rooting for a couple despite knowing the two don’t end up together years down the line. But the warm and fuzzy emotions that flooded my body during that kiss prove that Tell Me Lies was successful in its efforts.

After so much trauma and toxicity, it’s refreshing to see two inherently kind characters connect on a deeper, genuine level and experience a wholesome new beginning. (Sure, it involves cheating! But it’s cheating on people who already cheated on them! And in Tell Me Lies math, that adds up to a mild offense!) Bree and Wrigley have been through so much in their lives and have each had to grow up too fast, so the fact that Tell Me Lies approached the early stages of their friendship-turned-crush with such an innocence felt, in a way, like they were simultaneously reclaiming fractions of their youth while rediscovering themselves. Their romance is sweet, gentle, and empathetic. Their connection is unexpected, yet understandable. And while I once strongly shipped Pippa and Wrigley and Evan and Bree, since Pippa and Diana found love and Evan’s character evolution took a deeply disappointing turn, it feels like Bree and Wrigley are meant to be. Even the cast agrees!

“I loved [the Wrigley and Bree twist]. It made me so happy. I love those characters,” White told Decider over Zoom. “I love their scenes. I thought they were awesome.” Van Patten agreed adding, “Those scenes are so great. It’s such a relief, because it’s so sweet. Even though they’re cheating — I mean, it’s there’s some negative parts about it, too — but when you see them together, you kind of forget.”

The Season 3, Episode 6 kiss proved that on top of an emotional connection, these two have some serious physical chemistry. So even though I’ve watched Bree marry Evan with my own eyes in 2015, I’ll be shipping Bree and Wrigley against all odds! This is Tell Me Lies, so anything can happen. Right?! Stay tuned to see what Season 3’s final two episodes have in store for the show’s hottest new duo in past and present day.
