Brian Daboll makes change to Giants' practice routine

There are tweaks every year to the offseason workout program, the organized team activity practices and the training camp regimen.

This spring, the Giants are going with an increased number of 7-on-7 reps.

Head coach Brian Daboll added this in after new quarterback Russell Wilson made the suggestion.

Daboll mentioned on Thursday that Russell is pleased with the recent changes. They have introduced more competitive practice periods where players are required to simulate real-game scenarios. These scenarios now include not only third-down situations but also quarters within a game, taking into account the time remaining and the score. This emphasis on situational practice has been implemented daily.

This is yet another offensive system for Wilson — the Giants are his fourth team in the past five years — and the more he gets to work in passing drills with defenders on the field, the better for him to speed up the learning process.

“I think it’s important to listen to the quarterbacks. They’re the ones that are touching the ball on every play,” Daboll said.

The Giants face the Jets on Aug. 16 in their annual preseason matchup.

Earlier that week, the two teams will engage in two joint practices, one at the Giants facility and another at the Jets facility.

Daboll liked the way a joint practice worked last summer, arranging it with then-Jets coach Robert Saleh.

Daboll was able to make it work again this year with first-year Jets coach Aaron Glenn.

“I have a good relationship with A.G.,” Daboll said. Known him for a long time. Obviously, he was with Detroit the last couple years, and he and I have a good working relationship, a good personal relationship as well. It was good to sit down and kind of iron through some of the things that we wanted to get done, logistics of it. “We thought that would be good for both teams. Kind of traveling a little bit, good for the fan base. So, it was really easy to work with A.G., and those are competitive days and good for the team.”

The Giants also face the Bills and Patriots in the preseason, but will not do any joint practices with those teams.

WR Malik Nabers (toe) once again did not practice. … Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, as he has done all spring, called the plays.

Rookie QB Jaxson Dart hit TE Daniel Bellinger for a touchdown in a 7-on-7 period.

Dart later connected with rookie WR Da’Quan Felton.

Starting LG Jon Runyan, coming off shoulder surgery, participated in team drills for the first time. … DL Cory Durden had an interception off a deflected Tommy DeVito pass.
