LOS ANGELES (AP) — Just over a month after being apprehended for allegedly driving under the influence, Britney Spears has checked into a rehabilitation center for substance abuse treatment.
On March 5, officers from the California Highway Patrol were alerted to a report of a BMW speeding and weaving dangerously on U.S. 101 in Ventura County, near the boundary with Los Angeles County, according to the CHP.
Spears, who resides in the vicinity, underwent a series of field sobriety tests and was subsequently taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of both alcohol and drugs, as reported by authorities. She was detained at a county jail but released after several hours.
The investigation was handed over to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office on March 23. They are expected to determine whether to file charges against Spears ahead of a court date set for May 4.
A representative at the time deemed Spears’ behavior as “completely inexcusable” and expressed hope that this incident would serve as a pivotal point for much-needed change in her life.
Spears has mostly set aside her music career. She has not toured in nearly eight years and has not put out an album in nearly a decade.
In 2021, she regained control of her life decisions and finances when a court-ordered conservatorship was dissolved after nearly 14 years. Two years later, she released a bestselling memoir, “The Woman in Me.”
