CHICAGO (WLS) — A South Side nursing home is at risk of closing this weekend after years of complaints and violations.

A new report details several cases ranging from lagging responses to assault at the Southview Manor in Bronezville.

The facility is now set to lose its funding from Medicare and Medicaid.

The nursing home is being dropped, effective Saturday, from the Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement program. The federal government cited a litany of complaints of alleged abuse and neglect.

The complaints at Southview Manor go back years, and now the 200-bed Bronzeville nursing home in the 3300 block of South Michigan faces the loss of federal reimbursement.

In a public notice, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said the facility “has failed to attain substantial compliance” with nearly a dozen requirements, including those related to “Quality of Life,” “Quality of Care,” “Food and Nutrition Services,” and “Freedom from Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation.”

The agency gave Southview its lowest possible rating, citing 39 health complaints in the past three years that resulted in citations.

CMS reported among the facility’s long-stay residents more than 43% received antipsychotic medication, more than double the Illinois average for nursing homes. The agency detailed multiple violent encounters at the facility.

In one alleged incident in November of last year, a fight broke out between two male residents after a female resident, who was on medication which made her disoriented, was allegedly sexually assaulted in her room by one of the men.

CMS found no changes were made to protect that woman, and the alleged attacker was allowed to remain on her same floor.

Multiple messages left by ABC7 for nursing home management were not returned, and an employee who greeted ABC7 at Southview said the facility had no comment.
