In a tragic turn of events at Brown University, two lives have been lost, and nine others have sustained injuries following a shooting incident. Authorities have reported that a person of interest is now in custody.
The individual was apprehended at a hotel in Coventry, approximately 17 miles from Providence, as confirmed by police sources to Fox News.
During a press conference, Providence Chief of Police Colonel Oscar L. Perez Jr. refrained from commenting on any potential ties the suspect might have to Brown University, emphasizing the preliminary nature of the ongoing investigation.
Chief Perez outlined the police department’s next steps, which include working closely with prosecutors, gathering evidence, and conducting thorough interviews to piece together the events of the day.
Providing an update on the victims’ conditions, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley informed that seven individuals are currently stable, one remains in critical but stable condition, and one has fortunately been discharged from medical care.
“We’re going to continue to have our thoughts with the families, the individuals that have been impacted by this horrific event,” said Rhode Island Gov. Daniel McKee.
Smiley also confirmed that the shelter in place order for the Providence community has been lifted. Brown University had announced the lifting of a campus shelter in place order earlier Sunday morning.
