Brownsville Auto Parts Plant Faces Significant Job Cuts Affecting 600 Workers

In a significant blow to the local workforce, nearly 600 employees in Brownsville, Texas, are set to lose their jobs next month as First Brands Group, a major player in the auto parts industry, grapples with a severe financial crisis. This announcement is part of a broader nationwide reduction in jobs by the company.

First Brands Group, which operates facilities across the United States, has initiated these layoffs as part of its strategic response to ongoing economic challenges. The company officially notified the Texas Workforce Commission through a WARN notice on Wednesday, outlining the impending job cuts. Specifically, 345 employees at their Billy Mitchell facility, 183 at the Titan Distribution Center, and 43 at the ASC plant are scheduled to be laid off by April 30.

This move is in compliance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, a federal mandate that requires businesses to provide a minimum of 60 days’ notice prior to any plant closure or mass layoff. This regulation aims to give affected workers ample time to seek alternative employment or retraining opportunities.

Amid these challenging circumstances, First Brands Group’s decision underscores the broader economic pressures facing the auto parts sector. Meanwhile, the company’s announcement comes on the heels of another automotive industry issue, as Ford recalls 850,000 vehicles due to potential rearview camera malfunctions.

The company filed a WARN notice with the Texas Workforce Commission on Wednesday that 345 workers at its Billy Mitchell facility, 183 at its Titan Distribution Center, and 43 workers at its ASC plant will lose their jobs on April 30.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act is a federal requirement mandating that businesses must provide at least 60 days’ notice before a plant will close or issue mass layoffs.

First Brands Group is a worldwide company that makes automotive parts. In all, 571 workers are losing their jobs in South Texas. Nationwide, many of the company’s plants will be shutting their doors on the same date.

The company is also closing facilities at maquiladora plants all along the U.S.-Mexico border, including those in Matamoros and Juarez.

Last month in Juarez, some workers set up camp at one of the First Brands facilities in fear that it might be closing.

In September, the Michigan-based company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Several company officials are accused of a fraud scheme.

Maquiladora manufacturers in Mexico employ nearly 3 million people and represent more than 60 percent of the country’s total exports, according to the National Council of the Maquiladora and Manufacturing Export Industry.
