A faith leader called for unity after a 14-year-old girl was shot and killed in Brunswick Saturday night.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — The Brunswick community is mourns the death of a 14-year-old girl who authorities said was shot and killed Saturday night.

Reverend Abra Lattany-Reed, who grew up in Brunswick and is a leader in the South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church, described the situation as one of “heartache and tragedy.” She says the pain is felt far beyond the immediate neighborhood.

“We are a loving community, a faithful community, a community that rallies around one another,” Lattany-Reed said. “It impacts the broader community because it requires us to do some thinking and praying and recognizing we have work to do around this issue of gun violence and safety.”

Authorities said the shooting occurred shortly after 8 p.m. on the 2700 block of Altama Avenue. Authorities said two suspects have been arrested.

The first, 17-year-old Daquarius Wallace, is accused of mishandling the gun that resulted in the girl’s death. He now faces charges of murder, cruelty to children, possessing a firearm as a minor, and reckless conduct.

The second suspect, 21-year-old Bobby Sullivan, faces charges including cruelty to a child, possession of stolen property, reckless conduct, and encouraging a child to break the law.

Lattany-Reed hopes the tragedy will spark conversations and actions that make neighborhoods safer. “I would hope that the broader community would do some conversations around what we can do to make all of our neighborhoods safe and well,” she said.

Both suspects remain in custody, and the Glynn County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate. We reached out to the Sheriff’s Office for more information on the suspects.
