In a significant development in Flagler County, jurors voted 11-1 to endorse the death penalty for Jermaine Williams, following the murder of his spouse, Yolanda Williams.
Taking place in Bunnell, Florida, the jury’s recommendation emerged on Wednesday, suggesting Williams be condemned for the fatal stabbing of his wife in 2024.
This recommendation targets 54-year-old Jermaine Williams, who was found guilty of fatally stabbing Yolanda multiple times, actions that ultimately led to her tragic demise.
Despite the jury’s strong stance, the ultimate decision will be made by Judge Dawn Nichols, who is expected to announce her verdict at a forthcoming date.
State Attorney R.J. Larizza expressed his determination, stating, “We are one step closer to achieving justice for Yolanda Williams, her loved ones, and the community of the 7th Circuit. We will persist in our advocacy for the death penalty and continue supporting the victim’s family.”
Shortly after 8 a.m. on Aug. 2, 2024, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported stabbing on South Pine Street. Deputies found the victim in the driveway of a home suffering from multiple stab wounds. Prosecutors said she had been stabbed 19 to 20 times and later died at a local hospital.
According to the State Attorney’s Office, surveillance video captured before the attack showed Williams entering the home and returning outside carrying an 8-inch chef’s knife.
Deputies found Williams nearby with blood on his pants and other clothing, investigators said. According to authorities, Williams was held at gunpoint by his father, who lived nearby, until deputies took him into custody. He was arrested at the scene.
Following his arrest, prosecutors said Williams admitted to investigators that he had retrieved the knife from the home and stabbed his wife. Authorities said he also told investigators that an argument between them had “pushed him over the edge” and made him feel like he “had nothing else to live for.”
Williams was on probation for a 2022 domestic violence case at the time of the killing. At the time, the victim told investigators Williams had abused her for more than 30 years and that she had been afraid to report the violence because she feared he would kill her.
Bunnell Police Chief David Brannon released the following statement after the sentence recommendation:
“Today’s proceedings are about far more than a criminal conviction and penalty. They are about Yolanda Williams, a beautiful life taken through an unimaginable act of violence.
On behalf of every member of the Bunnell Police Department, I extend our deepest condolences to Ms. Williams’ family, friends, and everyone who loved her. No verdict or sentence restores what was stolen from them, but we hope today’s outcome provides a measure of justice and, in time, a measure of peace.
The City of Bunnell has zero tolerance for violence. Acts of domestic violence, targeted violence, or any violent crime strike at the heart of every safe community. When someone chooses to commit such a horrific act, our commitment is unwavering. We pursue every available lead, dedicate every necessary resource, and work alongside our law enforcement and prosecutorial partners to identify those responsible, build the strongest case possible, and hold offenders fully accountable under the law.
This conviction reflects countless hours of dedicated work by the members of the Bunnell Police Department, whose professionalism, compassion, and determination never wavered from the moment they responded to this tragic scene. I also want to express my sincere appreciation to our partners at the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and the Office of the State Attorney.
