The tournament, now expanded to host 48 teams, witnessed Cabo Verde’s debut on the world stage. Against all odds, they found themselves up against two formidable giants, Argentina and Spain, who were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 by FIFA at the time.
Incredible as it may seem, neither of these powerhouses could claim a victory over Cabo Verde in regulation time. This island nation, with a modest population of around 530,000, pushed Argentina to the edge of defeat in the Round of 32. With the match tied 2-2, the game extended into extra time, creating a tense showdown.
Ultimately, Cabo Verde’s stirring run concluded when they narrowly lost to the Argentine team, with the final score at 3-2. Despite the defeat, the team departed the tournament with their heads held high, having accomplished what many had deemed impossible.
Cabo Verde faced Spain, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay during the group stage, all of which resulted in a draw.
Cabo Verde became the smallest-ever nation to qualify for the knockout rounds at the World Cup and delivered the performance of a lifetime against Argentina.
The unlikely hero for Cabo Verde was goalkeeper Josimar José Évora Dias, who is commonly known as Vozinha. The 40-year-old finished Friday’s match with seven saves, 100% successful dribbles, 100% ground duels won, two passes into the final third, eight recoveries and one defensive contribution against Argentina.
