It was as if Caitlin Clark never left Iowa.
A famous WNBA player revisited her former college to play a preseason game with the Fever team. Clark received a warm welcome from the enthusiastic Hawkeyes supporters. They showed their support with loud cheers and applause.
The fans eagerly waited outside the arena to catch the exhibition match between the Fever and the Brazil National Team. The game took place at the Hawkeye Arena, where Clark had spent four memorable years as a college basketball player, making a name for herself in hoops.
Tickets for the game averaged around $670, which had been the highest price on record since 2015, according to Vivid Seats.
As Clark emerged from the locker room, all eyes were on her. She took the time to acknowledge her fans, signing autographs for them as they reached out over the railing near the player tunnel.
“It’s exciting to see Caitlin and how much she’s improved and what she’s grown and how this professional team is different from the college team,” fan Rick Mason told HawkCentral.
Clark said before Sunday’s game that she was looking forward to returning to Iowa to play.
“I honestly haven’t been back to Iowa City a ton since I left a year ago,” Clark said, according to the Indy Star. “I’ve only been back a couple times, once for a football game and once for my jersey retirement. So, it’ll be fun to get back there, see some of my former teammates, my friends that are there. A lot of my family will be coming.”
Clark was given another loud ovation when she was introduced by the public address announcer, and it was just like old times when she pulled up for her first shot.
The roof nearly came off the building when Clark opened and closed the first quarter with pull-up 3s.
