California Coast Guard Base Incident: Driver Shot After Attempted Gate Ram, Officials Report

OAKLAND, Calif. — A tense situation unfolded late Thursday night when U.S. Coast Guard security personnel in California fired at a driver of a U-Haul truck who, according to officials, was attempting to breach a security gate.

The incident occurred around 10 p.m. at Coast Guard Island located in Alameda, where earlier in the day, hundreds of protesters had gathered. Coast Guard authorities reported that security personnel observed a vehicle approaching the base in an erratic manner and issued several verbal commands for the driver to halt.

Instead of complying, the driver allegedly reversed the vehicle and attempted to crash through the base’s gate, as stated by the U.S. Coast Guard.

“The actions of the vehicle posed an immediate threat to the safety of Coast Guard members and security staff,” the Coast Guard stated. “In response, law enforcement officers fired multiple live rounds.”

No Coast Guard members were injured in the incident. It is currently unknown if the driver was injured or if any arrests were made.

The FBI is leading the investigation.

The shooting comes after two protesters were injured Thursday morning as more than 100 federal agents were due to arrive at Coast Guard Island. Agents shouted at the group of protesters blocking a bridge that serves as the sole entryway and deployed pepper spray and flash bang granades to remove them.

Dozens of California Highway Patrol officers dressed in riot gear arrived Thursday afternoon and pushed protesters back to clear the intersection at the bridge. One protester was tackled to the ground and arrested.
