Authorities have indicated that faulty hydrants and a non-responsive sprinkler system may have exacerbated the swift escalation of a recent blaze.
TRACY, California — A devastating inferno obliterated a sprawling 1 million-square-foot medical supply warehouse on Thursday, sparking fears over potential disruptions in the supply chain and prompting scrutiny of fire safety protocols in expansive distribution centers.
Firefighters reported that the fire rapidly consumed the warehouse, which housed a range of medical supplies and robotic equipment powered by lithium-ion batteries. Just 40 minutes after the arrival of emergency crews, the entire structure was overtaken by the flames.
Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries, and the company confirmed that all employees were safely evacuated and accounted for.
Complications in the firefighting effort arose due to non-functioning fire hydrants and a sprinkler system that failed to activate. Fire officials noted that the sprinkler system had undergone an inspection earlier this year but did not function correctly when the fire ignited.
If the sprinkler systems had been activated, it would not have spread as quickly as it did, a fire official said.
Embers from the blaze also sparked several secondary fires, creating additional challenges for firefighters.
The warehouse was operated by Medline, one of the nation’s largest medical supply distributors. The company said it has activated contingency plans and is redirecting product distribution through other facilities.
“Medline’s supply chain is designed with resiliency, scale, and flexibility at its core,” the company said in a statement.
Fire officials warned the loss of the facility could have broader implications beyond the immediate area.
“This devastating fire is going to affect e-commerce throughout the nation,” a fire official said.
Health systems that rely on medical supply shipments said they are monitoring the situation and reviewing contingency plans, though several indicated they do not currently expect widespread disruptions to critical supplies.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire crews continued working to extinguish hot spots following the blaze.
