() Charlie Kirk, conservative activist and Turning Point USA co-founder, is dead after being shot at an event at Utah Valley University Wednesday.
President Donald Trump announced Kirk’s death on Truth Social.
“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!” the president wrote.
A manhunt for the shooter is underway after witnesses reported hearing a single gunshot fired at the event, which hit Kirk. He was rushed to the hospital but died of his injuries.
The school initially said a suspect was in custody but police now say the shooter is still at large. A person taken into custody after the shooting is not believed to be the gunman and has been released, university officials say.
Kirk is known for debating college students and has become an influential figure in young conservative circles and on social media. He is married with two young children, a 3-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son.
Kirk was at Utah Valley University as part of his “The American Comeback Tour.”
