Charlie Kirk shooting: Photos of 'person of interest' released

() Authorities have released photos of a “person of interest” in the fatal shooting of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk.

Here’s what we know:

Kirk, a media personality and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot Wednesday while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University. No others were harmed, and it appears only one shot was fired. Kirk was taken to a hospital by his security team and later pronounced dead.

Authorities initially said a suspect was in custody Wednesday, then later said that person had been released. Another person was taken into custody later that night and released after questioning. Officials said neither of those individuals was involved and have asked the public not to harass them.

As of Thursday, authorities said the suspect remains at large. Investigators said the shooter was on the roof of a building 200 yards from where Kirk was speaking and jumped off the roof and fled through a neighborhood after the shooting. A high-powered, bolt-action rifle was found in the woods nearby and is believed to be the weapon used in the shooting.

Investigators said they have “good footage” of the shooter but declined to say whether they had identified them. They later released photos of a person of interest. FBI special agent in charge Robert Bohls said the suspect appeared to be of college age and blended in well at the event.
